The European Commission released a communication to the European Parliament, Council, and Economic and Social Committee concerning its findings relating to customs risk management and security of the supply chain. This report identifies  gaps under the current system that require “urgent action” concerning data quality, supply chain modelling, and certain aspects of the methodology applied. The full Communication can be downloaded from: http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/resources/documents/customs/customs_controls/risk_management/customs_eu/com_2012_793_en.pdf

While the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) continues to work to align its definition and missions, a Congressional Research Services (CRS) study  said the agency “does not prioritize its missions,” and that “there is no clarity in the national strategies of federal, state and local roles and responsibilities.”  The CRS study can be accessed at: http://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/homesec/R42462.pdf

The latest problems with Boeing's new 787 Dreamliner passenger jet could be a disaster for the US plane manufacturer. The lithium-ion batteries used on board are unique -- and apparently also combustible. In the worst case, Boeing may have to make extensive modifications. We include an informative Der Spiegel report on the latest challenge facing the Dreamliner, available at: http://www.spiegel.de/international/business/lithium-ion-batteries-create-major-problems-on-boeing-dreamliner-787-a-878160.html
